Team Wandsworth’s Girls and Boys cross country teams have beaten more than 1800 young runners to win at the 2022/23 London Youth Games.
As well as medals for both teams, there were top three performances from Matilda Melley (9th), Isobel Mclennan (14th) and Ava Abel (15th) for the U11 girls, and Max Harrison (4th), Alfie Beasley- Suffolk (34th) and Alessandro Pecce (2nd) for the U11 boys.
Alessandro also got an individual silver medal in the U11s.
Meanwhile Team Wandsworth took Gold in the U13 boys’ team, with Edward Cunniffe (4th), Harry Allen (7th) and Sam Dyson (12th).
With its focus on borough-level competition, and as Europe’s largest youth multi-sports event, the London Youth Games offers opportunities for people aged 7 to 18 across the Capital to grow and excel in their field. The organisers say: “We believe London is the most exciting, diverse, and vibrant city in the world. Our vision is to create the world’s largest and most inclusive city-focused youth games that are accessible to all.”
The annual Youth Games, which are contested between the thirty-two London boroughs plus the City of London, take place at various sites for nine months of the year.
More than thirty events take place every year, including qualifying rounds and stand-alone finals at prestigious venues such as The Olympic Park and Aquatics Centre.
Badminton, Judo, Rowing and Cricket, as well as running, are just some of the sports that athletes can participate in, while the contest also includes Para Athletics, Para Football and Para Swimming making it possible for more young people with different levels of sporting ability to compete in the Games.
Wandsworth Borough’s Team Organiser, Grace Alleyne, said, “I am over the moon that the Wandsworth Girls and Boys team are silver medallists for 2022/2023. Everyone really enjoyed their experience racing in the LYG Cross Country competition and braved the mud and cold. I am very proud of each and every athlete that competed!”
The teams are free to join and open to all young people in London. If you would like to apply to join Team Wandsworth, sign up by registering for upcoming trials here and the team will be in touch.
You must either live or go to school in the London Borough of Wandsworth if you wish to join the team, and please note that each sport has individual eligibility criteria with regard to age and level of sporting ability.
