One-off payment possible for indirectly employed staff not receiving Living Wage
Cllr Simon Hogg says council aims to support the borough's most vulnerable residents

Wandsworth Council is considering making a one-off payment of £300 to any staff working for its contractors who are not receiving the Living Wage.
The council is stipulating that the Living Wage should be paid to all staff employed by new contracts but it is not backdating the requirement so some people working indirectly for the council are paid a lower hourly rate.
At a recent council meeting Cllr Simon Hogg, the Leader of Wandsworth indicated that the council was considering making the payment.
He said, “We’ve committed to the Living Wage but there are people working for the council on contracts who don’t receive it and I’m pleased to say tonight that I’m asking officers to investigate a one-off payment of £300 for these workers.”
“Times are tough for families and hard-working families on ordinary incomes who are trying to make ends meet have been stretched to breaking point.
“I hope that this payment will help make a difference.”
The measure would be part of the councils attempt to mitigate the impact of the rising cost-of-living for people on low incomes in the borough. These include a scheme to support families with uniform costs , Free COVID tests for frontline workers, a £130 Cost of Living payment for pensioners, The creation of warm spaces, a new independent Cost of Living Commission and more money for Citizens Advice Wandsworth.
Cllr Hogg added, “We are creating a fairer, more compassionate and sustainable council which supports and protects our most vulnerable residents, strengthening local communities and improving the lives of local people, all for the same low council tax ”
