New Masterplan Being Drawn Up for Wandle Delta | |
Residents being asked to comment on proposal for the riverside area Views of the Wandle Delta Wandsworth residents are being asked to comment on a masterplan to guide development in the riverside Wandle Delta area. The ‘Supplementary Planning Document’ will explore how to manage the comprehensive redevelopment of a number of sites in the area between Armoury Way, Putney Bridge Road, Old York Road and the river. The aim is to revitalise the area, enable the creation of new homes and jobs and make the Wandle Delta a visitor destination. The importance of ecology and biodiversity is being stressed, especially around the river. It will also look at better connecting the riverside area with the rest of the town, including the station, the town hall, the town centre and the Ram Brewery quarter. A number of sites are expected to come forward for development in the upcoming months and years, and planners are aiming ensure they are co-ordinated and contribute to a ‘sense of place’. Key areas covered by the strategy include Causeway Island, the gasholder site and land around it in Armoury Way, Dormay Street, Feathers Wharf and the Frogmore Depot. It will also look at the area around Wandsworth Bridge roundabout, including McDonalds, Jew’s Row and the grade-II listed Wandsworth Bus Garage. The council says that views of local people were sought before the plan was drawn up, including feedback from drop-in sessions at Southside Shopping Centre. The public will now get a chance to comment on the draft plan. Cabinet member for strategic planning and transport, Cllr John Locker, said, “We want to make sure that we create a distinctive place that people will want to live, work and visit.” “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform this former industrial area, make the most of the Thames and Wandle, ensure people can easily get around on foot and by bike and create a new public place with plenty of riverside paths, play streets and green open space."
