People queuing to get vaccinated at Twickenham Stadium
The mass vaccination drive at Twickenham Stadium this Bank Holiday Monday (31 May) saw around 11,000 people turn up to get vaccinated against Covid-19.
The ‘Let’s Tackle Covid’ event organised by local NHS in partnership with Hounslow Council and supported by England RFU reportedly got off the quite a slow start. However, as word start to spread that the Pfizer vaccine would be available to people under the normal age for eligibility there was a rush of registrations. Staff at the event told people that there was a surge of over 4,000 signing up on the web site in the afternoon as it became clear not all of the 15,000 jabs would be used up. A large proportion of those queuing appeared to be younger than 30 the age at which vaccines are currently generally available.
Residents of Hounslow and other boroughs in North West London were given the opportunity to have their first dose of the vaccination without delay. The event was held in response to an increase in the number of cases of coronavirus in the area including a significant proportion of the Indian variant.
Those who had turned up to be vaccinated were not discouraged by a small anti-vaccination demonstration outside the stadium.

Hounslow’s Leader, Cllr Steve Curran, said: “It was great to see so many people stepping up and getting vaccinated at Twickenham yesterday. Thank you - you are helping to protect yourself, your family and your friends. It was also wonderful to see so many volunteers helping out in true ‘One Hounslow’ spirit. We are grateful to you all for your continuing support.”
Hounslow’s Director of Public Health, Kelly O’Neill, added, “We’re making it as easy as possible for everyone to Step Up For Hounslow. If you have not yet been vaccinated, please do so when you can and please get PCR tested to help stop the spread of the virus. We’re here to help and to answer any questions you may have.”
Last week 1,300 residents were vaccinated in one day at one of the Council’s pop-up vaccination sites at the Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, and over 19,000 people have been vaccinated since the Borough’s surge programme started 10 days ago
Surge PCR testing and increased vaccination is happening in Hounslow for approximately another four weeks. The centre at the car park in Stamford Brook is open from 8am-8pm for walk-in tests for people without symptoms.
