Fatal Assault at Charing Cross Hospital
85-year-old man dies after attack by fellow patient

A murder investigation is underway following a fatal assault at Charing Cross Hospital, where an 85-year-old patient died after being attacked by another patient on 18 September.
The victim, Andrew Farmer from Ealing, died on 25 September from injuries sustained during the incident. Metropolitan Police arrested a 70-year-old man at the scene. Anatoliy Podmazko, of no fixed address, was charged with grievous bodily harm two days later and is due to appear at Isleworth Crown Court on 17 October.
Charing Cross Hospital, part of the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, is one of London’s major teaching hospitals.
Detective Inspector Kirsten Hadleigh, leading the investigation, stated: “We remain in close contact with Andrew’s loved ones and are keeping them up to date with the progress of our investigation.”
Farmer’s partner, Paul Wrigley, paid tribute to him, describing him as “an Oxford First” and someone who “touched deeply” everything from opera to the underprivileged.
The investigation continues as police work with the Crown Prosecution Service to determine the next steps. The hospital has not yet issued a public statement regarding the incident.
