A talk by hosted by the Brentford & Chiswick Local History Society
November 8, 2024 The next meeting of the Brentford & Local History Society will mark the return of the Sanderson Design Group to Chiswick. The Sanderson & Sons Wallpaper Factory, designed by the Arts and Crafts Movement architect C F A Voysey, was completed in 1902. After a disastrous fire in their premises on the opposite side of the Passage in 1928 the firm left Chiswick. Newly renovated, this distinctive and unique landmark in Barley Mow Passage, has welcomed back the Sanderson Design Group this year. In her illustrated talk Caitlin Stracey, who leads the archives team, will explore the links between the Sandersons and Voysey, and between the Sanderson firm and Chiswick. The talk takes place on Monday 18 November at 7.30pm at the Chiswick Memorial Club, Bourne Place, (W4 2EL) and it will also be offered via Zoom. There is no charge to join this event and if you are attending in person, there is no need to book. However, if you want to join on-line, reserve your place via Ticket Tailor. Click the big blue button on screen to go to the booking page. Your ticket will provide the Zoom joining details. Future talks from the Society: Monday 16 December - The Temples of Industry Project: Firestone, Trico & AEC - An illustrated talk by Ishwari Giga, Curator at Gunnersbury Park Museum, who grew up locally. Passionate about social history and contemporary curating, she coordinated this project, funded by Historic England. Volunteers, former workers and young film-makers together assembled the content for new web pages to show how the decline of heavy industry shaped West London. Membership of the Brentford & Chiswick Local History Society ensures that you receive details of the Society’s programme of talks and outings and entitles you to a copy of the annual Journal. From time to time there are opportunities to join a small research group or assist with a local history project. Meetings, usually on the third Monday of the month, take place at Chiswick Memorial Club, Bourne Place, off Dukes Avenue opposite Chiswick Library. The membership year runs from January to December and the annual subscription costs £9.00. If you wish to join, either come along to one of the meetings, or print off, complete and send the membership form with your details and cheque for payment, or if you wish to use your credit or debit card through PayPal, click here but also send an email to membership@brentfordandchiswicklhs.org.uk giving your name, address, phone number, and confirmation that the society may contact you by email in the future.
