New Season of Local History Talks Begins

The Brentford and Chiswick Local History Society is resuming its series of talks this Monday (16 September).
The new season starts with an illustrated talk by Sarah Barber of Lancaster University on the subject “The Local and Global Impact of the Hawley family of Brentford”. She will be sharing her recent research into three generations of Hawleys and their colonial role in the East and West Indies. The Hawley family who were prominent in Brentford and Boston Manor from the late 1500s onward and held the lease on Brentford market for nearly 200 years.
The talk begins at 7.30pm at the usual venue of the Chiswick Memorial Club on Bourne Place and it can also be viewed on Zoom.

Monday 21 October - Historian, novelist and former soldier Charles Cordell is the author of two gripping Civil War novels. He will share his background, his historical research (available on his web site), finding inspiration in the General Crisis of the 17th century and its echoes today, and the local relevance of his characters and storylines. His book will be available on the evening and he'll be signing copies.
Monday 18 November - The Sanderson Design Group Homecoming: Voysey, Sanderson & Chiswick. The Sanderson & Sons Wallpaper Factory, designed by architect CFA Voysey, was completed in 1902. Newly renovated, this iconic landmark has welcomed back the Sanderson Design Group in 2024. Archive Manager, Caitlin Stracey, will explore the links between the Sandersons and Voysey, and between the firm and Chiswick.
Monday 16 December - The Temples of Industry Project: Firestone, Trico & AEC - An illustrated talk by Ishwari Giga, Curator at Gunnersbury Park Museum, who grew up locally. Passionate about social history and contemporary curating, she coordinated this project, funded by Historic England. Volunteers, former workers and young film-makers together assembled the content for new web pages to show how the decline of heavy industry shaped West London.

Membership of the Brentford & Chiswick Local History Society ensures that you receive details of the Society’s programme of talks and outings and entitles you to a copy of the annual Journal. From time to time there are opportunities to join a small research group or assist with a local history project.
Meetings, usually on the third Monday of the month, take place at Chiswick Memorial Club, Bourne Place, off Dukes Avenue opposite Chiswick Library. The membership year runs from January to December and the annual subscription costs £9.00.
