Radar Speed Cameras to Be Trialled in Ealing Borough

Ealing has been selected as one of the first boroughs in London to trial Transport for London’s new radar-based speed cameras, as part of a major push to reduce road danger and enforce safer speeds across the capital.
TfL, working with the Metropolitan Police, will install the new cameras at up to ten sites city-wide over the coming weeks. The trial includes locations in Hammersmith & Fulham, Brent, Hackney, Haringey, Tower Hamlets, Havering, Croydon and Sutton, as well as Ealing, with all sites chosen based on risk and suitability. TfL says every location is in a 20mph or 30mph road, where speeding remains a persistent concern but it will not be disclosing exactly where the cameras are being placed.
The new devices replace older spot-speed cameras that rely on sensors embedded in the road surface. Instead, the radar-based system uses 4D radar and a 4K colour camera, requiring no in-ground equipment or visible flash. TfL says the technology is more reliable, easier to maintain and capable of monitoring up to five lanes of bi-directional traffic — a significant upgrade from the three-lane limit of current cameras.
The improved image quality will also speed up enforcement, helping police identify offenders more effectively.
Before enforcement begins, all signage will be checked and cameras calibrated in line with TfL and Met Police policy.
TfL says the trial is essential to tackling one of the biggest causes of serious road danger. In 2024, around half of all fatal collisions in London listed speed as a contributory factor.
The trial forms part of the newly published Vision Zero Action Plan 2, a joint commitment by TfL, the Mayor, the Met and London boroughs to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on the capital’s roads. The plan includes expanding the safety-camera network by at least 20 new locations, delivering 65km of new safer-speed limits on TfL roads and supporting boroughs to introduce more 20mph schemes.
Siwan Hayward, TfL’s Director of Security, Policing and Enforcement, said the new technology is vital to London’s future enforcement needs saying, “Speeding continues to be a major cause of the most devastating collisions on our roads. This trial allows us to test new radar-based camera technology to ensure it meets London’s future enforcement needs. Together with the Met we are using every tool available to deter speeding, reduce road danger and save lives.”
Detective Chief Superintendent Donna Smith of the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command added, “It is tragic whenever anyone is killed or seriously injured on our roads, and speeding remains a major factor. This trial will improve reliability and deliver better quality images, helping our officers hold offenders to account and ensuring we have a modern and effective enforcement system that saves lives.”
With Ealing included in the first wave of installations, residents can expect to see the new cameras appear on key routes where speeding has been a long-standing concern.
The cameras are expected to be operational later this year once installation and calibration are complete.
