Hanger Hill residents getting caught out by obscured warnings
Local councillors are saying that residents of Hanger Hill are being caught out by restrictions near a local school because the associated signage is not visible. Liberal Democrat Councillor Athena Zissimos, who represents Hanger Hill ward, says she has worked for months to get Ealing Council to make the School Street signs around the Holy Family School in the Hanger Hill Garden Estate clearer. She adds that she has been frustrated by what she claims is the lack of engagement by the Labour-run council. Residents have been given parking penalty tickets when driving through Vale Lane during restricted times. The warning signs are obstructed by foliage and it is being suggested that insufficient time is given to read the signs banning the turn. Once the turn is made into the School Street you automatically receive a penalty notice. Recently Ealing Council had multiple tickets rejected by the Traffic Adjudicator which may be helping to prompt a U-turn from the Council. Liberal Democrat Councillor Athena Zissimos said, “Drivers continue to be completely unaware, that they have crossed into a School Street until the penalty notice arrives in the post, despite assurances by the Council that the signage is sufficient. It now appears that the Council has decided that it needs to cut back foliage and improve the signs on approach to the Holy Family School. Liberal Democrats say we look forward to the improvements and expect them to be in place before the start of the new school year.” Cllr Zissimos won the Hanger Hill ward seat in this year’s local elections taking a seat from the Conservatives. The Liberal Democrats, who are now the main opposition in the borough support the School Streets restrictions. Ealing Council has been asked to comment.
