Alastair Mitton to contest the seat currently held by Rupa Huq
The Liberal Democrats have selected long term Ealing resident Alastair Mitton as their Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Ealing Central and Acton. The next general election is scheduled to be held no later than January 2025 which in practical terms means it is unlikely to be any later than autumn 2024. Recent political turmoil has resulted in some speculation that a snap election would be called. The constituency is currently represented by Rupa Huq who has held the seat since 2015, holding it now with a large majority after winning initially by just a couple of hundred votes. She is suspended from the Labour Party after making comments about Kwasi Kwarteng which have widely been described as racist but for which she made an unqualified personal apology to the Chancellor. The MP is currently going through a process which is required before the removal of her suspension can be considered and is not able to comment while this is happening. Alastair Mitton said “I am incredibly honoured to have been selected to carry the Liberal Democrat standard for the next General Election. I look forward to making the case for the kind of decent, sensible politics that everyone yearns for.” “Labour have abandoned Ealing, it’s just not good enough to say they are holding an investigation into Rupa Huq. Kier Starmer and Sadiq Khan have both already condemned her comments as racist. If Rupa Huq had a shred of decency she would resign and face the voters. Labour’s record locally is one of failure almost everywhere you look, it’s time for change. I look forward to the election whenever it may come, the earlier the better.”
