Bakery and Butcher Fined Over Serious Hygiene Failings

Two food businesses in the borough of Ealing have been hit with fines totalling more than £25,000 after repeated hygiene breaches including pest infestations led to their prosecution.
The cases, brought by Ealing Council, centred on Sciascia Storey and Co Ltd, a commercial bakery based in the Acton Business Centre in Park Royal, and Southall Deshi Bazar Ltd, a butcher and grocery store in Southall. Council food safety officers uncovered significant public health risks during inspections in 2024 and early 2025.
At Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on 8 July, Sciascia Storey and Co Ltd was fined £12,000 and ordered to pay £5,120 in court costs. Its director, Julian Sciascia, admitted multiple offences on behalf of the company, including failures to control pests and maintain clean equipment. The bakery, which supplies products to restaurants and hotels, was twice forced to close following inspections that revealed mouse infestations and contamination risks. The business has since reopened and continues to operate.
Also appearing in court was Southall Deshi Bazar Ltd, whose inspection revealed mice and cockroach infestations, unsafe meat storage, and poor cleanliness. The company was fined £4,000 with £2,827 in costs, while director Mohammed Belal was fined £461 with additional costs, bringing the total penalties for the business and its director to over £8,000.
Following the February 2024 inspection, Southall Deshi Bazar Ltd was given a food hygiene rating of 0—the lowest possible. Its rating was raised to 2 in March 2025, indicating that some improvement is still necessary.
Councillor Kamaljit Nagpal, cabinet member for decent living incomes, condemned the findings saying, “These appalling cases again highlight the council’s firm commitment to holding food businesses accountable when they fail to meet hygiene standards and put public safety at risk.”
She added that while most of the borough's food businesses maintain high standards, the council will continue to inspect rigorously and support responsible operators through training and guidance.
