Second Chess Tournament for Girls to Be Held | ||||
Follows on from popularity of first event that took place in February
June 15, 2023 A second chess tournament for girls is to be held at the Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls. This follows on from the success of an earlier competition that took place this February in which seventy competitors entered from local primary and secondary schools on Sunday 26 February. In addition, 30 girls played simultaneous chess against five times England women's champions Harriet Hunt and Susan Lilac. Dr Rupa Huq, MP gave out the prizes to the winners and was very impressed with the enthusiasm of the competitors. She also expressed great disappointment about the limited opportunities for girls to take part in chess. It is now planned to hold a further tournament on Sunday, 25 June. Again, this is a free tournament and there will be 120 girls from primary school to University level taking part. Ellen Wilkinson for Girls in Ealing is working in partnership with the England Women’s Chess Coach Mr Lorin D’Costa to promote tournament chess to female chess players. Lorin D'Costa is an International Master and has led them in both the European Team Championships and the World Chess Olympiads. He has also founded the charity "She Plays to Win" which promotes chess among girls. You can also get play chess in the local area by joining the Ealing Chess Club which meets every Monday evening at Actonians Sports Club. Ellen Wilkinson School is on Queen's Drive (W3 0HW).
