Training classes also available for primary school age children
February 2, 2023 A new chess tournament for girls is being launched in the borough of Ealing this month. It will be free to participate in and there will be free training classes to accompany it. Ellen Wilkinson for Girls in Ealing is working in partnership with the England Women’s Chess Coach Mr Lorin D’Costa to promote tournament chess to primary school girls. It is offering a free girls chess starter tournament, and a free training with England women’s 5 times winner on Sunday, 26 February at the school. It will be for Year 4-6 primary school girls who are new to tournament chess or without English Chess Federation rating. Lorin D'Costa is an International Master and is also England Women Chess Team's coach and has led them in both the European Team Championships and the World Chess Olympiads. He has also founded the charity "She Plays to Win" which promotes chess among girls. You can sign your daughter up for the tournament by completing an online form. Places are limited and the deadline to enter is 12 February. Places are allocated on a first come, first served basis. The Training class takes place between 11.30am-12.15pm and those intending to participate in the tournament should arrive before 1pm. There will be five rounds to the tournament which is designed as a fun and gentle way to introduce girls to tournament chess. Girls will be required to sign up for English Chess Federation (ECF) Membership. Junior SIlver is free for those who have never had it before. Certificates will be given to all girls who attend. Rupa Huq MP will be in attendance and will be handing out the prizes for the winners. Ellen Wilkinson School is on Queen's Drive (W3 0HW).
