Thames Path Collapses Near Kew Gardens
High tides and exceptionally wet weather blamed for landslip

A large hole has appeared on the Thames Path by Kew Gardens this Saturday (19 October).
Water was flooding through the several metres wide gap which is just past the car park and opposite Brentford Dock.
The path is now closed between Kew Gardens and Richmond Lock with Richmond Council engineers working to restore the path.
Joggers using the towpath witness the gap opening and getting gradually wider. The collapse coincided with heavy rain and exceptionally high tides and it is believed this caused a landslip on the embankment.
The Port of London Authority (PLA) issued a notice saying, “Mariners are advised that, a portion of the south embankment in Syon Reach has collapsed, leading to a landside which has encroached into the river Thames and authorised channel.
“The landside consisting of earth, debris and trees has reduced the navigable depth of water in this area and poses a potential hazard to navigation.”

At this stage it is not known how long it will take to reopen the path.
