Outside Art Trail of Discovery to Be Launched

The Arts Society Chiswick has created walk which takes in 24 pieces

A new art trail which covers Chiswick, Acton and Hammersmith is to be officially launched this month

The Arts Society Chiswick (TASCH) has curated the Outside Art Trail of Discovery which highlights 24 art installations across the area as part of its 10th Anniversary celebrations. There is an array of public art in this part of west London and trail is designed to help discover art in places not noticed before with the aim of fostering curiosity and provide educational experiences in an accessible and enjoyable manner. This self-guided trail features works by artists such as Joel Bergner, Fin DAC, and David Mach, including murals, mosaics, and sculptures. Notable pieces include the Chiswick Timeline, Carrie Reichardt’s Mosaic House, and The Fantastic Herons.

The Outside Art Trail is a volunteer-led initiative which will be launched on Thursday, 12 June at POSK on King Street in Hammersmith at 8:00pm before the TASCH June talk. Brochures will be available at the meetingwhich contain more information including a map and they can also be picked up Chiswick Town Hall and POSK. Yet more information on the individual pieces can be found on the TASCH website and there is also an interactive Google Map which can be opened on a mobile to assist in finding the way from piece to piece.

In the run up to the TASCH 10th Anniversary, Olivia Freeman (TASCH Chair 2021-25) attended a talk on The Arts Society’s Trails of Discovery programme. It has evolved over time to include various types of trails: Children’s Trails, targeted at ages 8–12, these trails guide young explorers through historic sites, encouraging them to observe and learn about art, architecture, and history; Memory Trails, developed for individuals living with dementia, these trails are crafted to evoke memories and stimulate conversation through sensory engagement with historical environments and Neighbourhood Trails which are self-guided walks focusing on local history, architecture, and culture.

Olivia thought a Neighbourhood Trail of Discovery would commemorate the 10th Anniversary well and so, after discussions with Sara Gronmark (known to many as ‘The Cake Lady’), the Outside Art Trail of Discovery was born. Sara has curated this trail as during lockdown, cycling round the local area for exercise, she first started noticing the art in the streets. Bursts of creativity during the Covid restrictions were what first attracted her and then she realised that she’d been passing pieces of art for years without paying them much attention.

The Outside Art Trail of Discovery aims to increase awareness of the number and variety of art works in our area, some installations are well-known, while others are hidden gems that blend into the urban landscape. and encourage you to look out for more. Unfortunately, two of the pieces on the trail, The Acton Tree of Life and The People's Throne, have recently been subject to arson attacks.

Olivia Freeman says. “Discover art in places you may not know, there are so many works by interesting artists all over the place from the Murals of Acton to the sculptures on the Thames Path.”

This Trail is available to everyone but if you enjoy it, you are encouraged to try out one of TASCH’s monthly lectures. Annual Membership of the Arts Society Chiswick includes 10 expert lectures on the second Thursday of every month (except August and December) and the opportunity to participate in tours, visits, social events and special interest days.
