His great-niece to give The Arts Society Chiswick's January 2025 Lecture
December 28, 2024 The Arts Society Chiswick’s starts its 10th Anniversary year with a lecture on the subject of “Discovering MacDonald Gill: Architect, Artist and Mapmaker”. This illustrated talk by Max Gill’s great-niece, Caroline Walker, presents a colourful overview of this versatile artist's personal life and artistic achievements and is being given on Thursday, 9 January 2025 at 8pm at POSK, King Street Hammersmith. MacDonald 'Max' Gill, younger brother of the sculptor and typographer Eric Gill, was an architect, graphic designer and letterer, best known for his pictorial maps, especially those for the London Underground. He also created painted maps for Arts & Crafts houses including Lindisfarne Castle, magnificent murals for Cunard liners, and eye-catching publicity posters for organisations such as the Empire Marketing Board. An enduring legacy is his alphabet for the Imperial War Graves Commission used on all British military headstones since the First World War. Experienced lecturer Caroline Walker began research into her great-uncle ‘Max’ in 2006. Since then, she has co-curated several exhibitions of his work around the country, contributed articles to publications including Country Life and the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, and set up a dedicated website. Max's work can be found in many localities around Britain. Caroline will include local connections wherever possible. Olivia Freeman, Chair, The Arts Society Chiswick said, “We welcome back members old and new together with guests for this illustrative talk.” Doors open at 7pm, as does the private bar with the lecture beginning at 8pm. The Lecture will start at 8pm and guests are very welcome for a payment of £15 on the door. Membership of the Arts Society Chiswick includes ten expert lectures on the second Thursday of every month (except August and December) and the opportunity to participate in tours, visits, social events and Special Interest Days.
