New Lighting Installed on Wandsworth Bridge |

The 'most boring' crossing on the River Thames gets a glow up April 17, 2025 Wandsworth Council has installed a new exterior lighting system on Wandsworth Bridge in an attempt to make it more attractive. Built just before the start of the Second World War it was made deliberately drab to avoid the attention of the Luftwaffe. The dull blue/grey paint scheme, originally intended to blend into the colour of the river remains even after the major refurbishment that took place in 2021. This has led to some describing it as London’s ‘most boring’ bridge. It closed again for essential repair works in 2023 but as Wandsworth marks its years as London Borough of Culture that more attention has been paid to the aesthetics of the bridge. The council says the new lighting makes the bridge more visually appealing while respecting its historic roots. Cllr Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport, said, "Wandsworth Bridge is a vital river crossing. This lighting scheme makes it a striking and inviting part of the local streetscape. This is just one example of how we’re working to create more pride in our streets and public spaces for everyone in Wandsworth."
