| Lib Dem Sarah Ludford believes MEPs should lead the way Liberal Democrat MEP Sarah Ludford has welcomed a report in the European Parliament which sets a goal of a 50% reduction in pedestrian and cyclist deaths and urges tougher driver testing such as for eyesight.
The report calls for a road safety strategy from the European Commission, to include better driver training, an EU road safety co-ordinator and increased road safety budgets.

 Sarah Ludford commented:
"Pedestrians are 9 times and cyclists 7 times more likely to be killed in a road accident than those travelling by car, and lorry blind spots are still presenting a lethal danger especially to cyclists. Since many people travel across Europe, it is high time the EU had a serious plan to cut carnage on our roads."

"I strongly endorse the report's call for mandatory eyesight tests for drivers at least every ten years. Eyesight changes and it's essential that drivers undergo checks to see if they are driving within safe levels."

“Firmer action at the EU level will hopefully have a direct impact in making the streets of Hounslow safer for all road users.”
