Couple Travel to Chiswick to Steal Back Their Own Car

A couple who was forced to reclaim a stolen car after police were unable to act have seen their case attract national press attention.
Mia Forbes Pirie and Mark Simpson were shocked to discover that their Jaguar E-Pace had disappeared from where it had been parked near their home in Brook Green last Wednesday (4 June). It was fitted with a ghost immobiliser which was designed to prevent anyone but the owner driving it and also contained a tracker.
Using this, they were able to identify that the car had been moved at 3.20am but was still only a couple of miles away in Chiswick at 10.30am. When they phoned the police, they were told that it was not possible to send officers to reclaim it immediately.
They therefore decided to ‘steal’ their own car back by driving over in their second vehicle to the quiet back street where the car had been left. When they opened the car, they found that the thieves had ripped up its carpets in attempt to access the wiring.
Ms Forbes Pirie, a former solicitor and now working as a mediator, and her husband, a commercial barrister, had added additional security to their car having previously been victims of vehicle theft. They believe that a flat bed truck may have been used to bring the car to Chiswick in what they describe as a ‘reasonably sophisticated’ operation and neighbours did report hearing unusual noises during the night.
Ms Forbes Pirie told The Times. “Since we’ve found it lots of people have touched the car and the police say that they’re going to look underneath the carpets and at the fuse box to see if there are prints there. But it wouldn’t have cost very much for them to tell us not to touch anything. That’s the one criticism I have.
“The police are under-resourced and it’s a shame. But if there aren’t any consequences to people stealing cars or a lot of the other crimes where there aren’t any consequences, then I don’t really see what the deterrent is to stop people from doing it more.”
The police were subsequently in touch saying that a forensics team would be coming to examine the car.
