Affordable new homes are available to older people in the borough
People living in parts of Hammersmith and Shepherd's Bush are eligible for low cost housing

Older people on a low income and looking for an affordable new home are being invited to tour Hammersmith United Charities’ Almshouses.
The charity’s summer Open Week, between 21-25 June, will take place at John Betts House on Rylett Road. The event will give local older people in need of sheltered accommodation the opportunity to look round the flats, communal areas and award-winning gardens, and have a chat to staff and residents. Anyone is welcome – including health and social care professionals who want to visit on behalf of someone else.
The Open Week is being held to raise local awareness about the flats available now at the charity’s Hammersmith two sheltered housing schemes.
Both schemes – which are on Rylett Road and Sycamore Gardens - are near bus routes, shops and health and community services, and are available from £879 per month. They have communal gardens, a busy social calendar, daily welfare checks and accessible buildings, and are protected by a trust so they can only ever be used for housing.
People who are over 60, on a low income, and who have lived in the charity’s area of benefit as an adult for five years may be eligible to live in the charity’s sheltered housing. The area of benefit includes: Addison; Askew; Avonmore & Brook Green; College Park & Old Oak; Hammersmith Broadway; Ravenscourt Park; Shepherd’s Bush Green; and Wormholt & White City.
According to Bill, a resident, “I used to live in a bedsit just around the corner from here in Rylett Avenue. I’d walk past John Betts House every day and think, “That looks like a nice place to live.” I never dreamed I’d live here myself. It’s got everything you could want. When I wake up in the morning, the sun comes streaming in through the big windows. There are huge gardens right outside, and you can smell the flowers in my room.”
“We are really excited to be throwing open our doors for people to visit us this summer and have a good look round,” says Hammersmith United Charities CEO Victoria Hill. “I’m so proud of our almshouses and gardens and think we have a really welcoming community where people can live safely and independently. But don’t take my word for it - come along to our Open Week and see for yourself.”
