Gunnersbury Park Sports Hub Finally Opens | ||||
Centre provides large gym, sports hall, tennis courts as well as ten outdoor pitches
The sports hub in Gunnersbury Park, which was originally due to open in 2017, is operating in line with government Covid-19 restrictions. The facility welcomed visitors from Monday 12 April and offers a variety of facilities and activities for a range of ages and abilities. It has a large station gym with more than 100 machines and two group exercise studios with automated virtual classes, a large-sized sports hall offering a variety of sports, including competition standard facilities for handball, futsal and volleyball, as well as many others. The outdoor pitches are available for hire, offering eight tennis courts and two full size all-weather pitches as well as 10 grass pitches for football, rugby and cricket. The hub will also act as a base for a number of local sporting organisations. A monthly membership costs £32.95 with no joining fee and that includes use of the gym and fitness classes. The sports hub was built by Ealing and Hounslow councils, which jointly own Gunnersbury Park; along with the community interest company that runs it on their behalf. It will be operated by the leisure provider Better. Gary Alderson, Ealing Council’s executive director of place said, “We have worked alongside our partners Hounslow to ensure we deliver important community, sports and leisure facilities for residents in the local area. “Our long-term vision will see Gunnersbury Park as a place where local people can enjoy sport, beautiful green spaces and a rich local history long into the future. “With all the COVID-19 limitations this past year, many people may have been finding it tougher to keep active. – but the Gunnersbury sports hub provides an array of opportunities to quickly get reacquainted with good exercise habits or perhaps the chance to start new ones.” Victoria Lawson, Executive Director of Environment, Culture and Customer Services at Hounslow Council, added, “We are delighted to announce that the Gunnersbury Sports Hub, a state-of-the-art new facility for local sports in Hounslow and Ealing, is open for business. From football, rugby and tennis to running and keeping fit, there are activities available for everyone. We urge local residents to take advantage of this fabulous new facility on their doorstep, which is situated in one of our beautiful green spaces. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our staff and partners who have worked so hard on this project.” Concerns have been expressed by some regular park uses about the impact the hub will have on non-sports visitors including the ability of the narrow access road to the car park to handle a significant increase in traffic. Gunnersbury Sports Hub is one of a range of leisure facilities which reopened this week (Monday 12 April) including Brentford Fountain Leisure Centre, Isleworth Leisure Centre, New Chiswick Pool and Osterley Sports and Athletics Centre.
