Will not be contesting the next local elections in Hounslow

Labour Councillor Ed Mayne (Isleworth) has announced that he will not run for election at the next council elections.

In a letter to local Labour Party members, Cllr Mayne (32) said that he would not be seeking re-selection as a Labour candidate next year. He has been one of three Labour councillors representing Isleworth ward since 2010 and has been a cabinet member of the council for 7 years.

Cllr Mayne, who is a train driver for South West Railways said that due to increasing pressures in his workload outside politics he did not feel that he could devote as much time as he would like to his role as a local councillor.

Ed Mayne grew up in Chiswick and became a controversial figure some years ago as he was the Hounslow Council cabinet member with responsibility for parking when the controversy over the CPZ for Park Road/Staveley Road began.

He held a number of cabinet posts while he was a member of Hounslow Council, including cabinet member with responsibility for Corporate Performance and Customer Care. Previous posts include Community Safety and Regulatory Services (Parking).

In the last general election, he was selected as party's general election candidate for a seat in Epsom & Ewell, facing the Conservative Party's Chris Grayling who had been MP since 2001. He fought his campaign mainly on transport policies.

“There is more work to be done and I regret that I will not have a hand in the tough decisions that lie ahead. But I feel that now is the time to hand over to someone who has more time to devote to representing the people of Isleworth, " he said.

Cllr Mayne said it had been a great pleasure working alongside Cllr Sue Sampson – the current Mayor of Hounslow, Cllr Linda Green and former councillor Mindu Bains in Isleworth and a privilege to serve as a Cabinet Member in the administrations of Cllr Jagdish Sharma and Cllr Steve Curran.

He assured Labour Party members that he would continue to be active in the local branch and would do all he could to ensure the re-election of three Labour Councillors in Isleworth and the election of Jeremy Corbyn as Britain’s next Prime Minister.
