Ealing Council’s revenue from parking permits has risen by double digits for the last four year and is now double what it was at the beginning of the decade.

A Freedom of Information request by cinch, the online used car retailer shows that over 100,000 permits have been issued since 2020 raising a total of £11,091,288.51 up until 2024.

Int the latest year for which figures are available £2,935,810 has been spent on permits a 9.3% rise.

This figure is likely to have risen further since, with Ealing recently mplementing new price tiers which means raised charges for high-emitting vehicles expanding from 4 to 13 bands. This means some vehicles could be charged up to £340 a year. There are also new surcharges, £55 for older diesels and £60 for second and subsequent vehicles per household.

Sam Sheehan, motoring editor at cinch, commented, “Parking permits can be great for making sure residents have somewhere to park near their homes, but there should be a balance between affordability and accessibility.

“Our research shows that parking permits are getting more expensive across the UK, putting extra financial strain on residents already dealing with rising living costs.

“Multi-car households are often the most affected. Second and third permits come at a premium and can be as much as four times more expensive than a first permit in some areas.”

The income from parking permits comes on top of the almost £6 million the borough collected from parking fines. In 2024, the London Borough of Ealing made £5,716,120 from issuing 142,903 PCNs (Penalty Charge Notices), which is a sharp rise on 2023. In 2023, Ealing Council issued 89,618 PCNs, making £4.4 million.
