There has been a call for action over the state of the subway under the Hanger Lane Gyratory with claims that wellies are needed by anyone using it on a regular basis.
Liberal Democrat councillors Athena Zissimos and Jonathan Oxley who represent Hanger Hill have been raising concerns about the quagmire, caused by an accumulation of leaves, dirt and blocked drains throughout the subway system that residents have to use to traverse under the A40 Western Avenue.
The councillors say that although the council’s contractor Greener Ealing Ltd (GEL) does regularly clean the subway, removing the leaves and the dirt, this is to no avail if Transport for London (TfL) has not cleared the drains, which are its responsibility.
This lack of coordination means that the quagmire quickly returns when it rains.
Cllr Athena Zissimos, who is her party’s spokesperson on Environment, Streets, Parks and Climate Change said, “The Liberal Democrats are appalled at the filthy and unsanitary environment resulting from inadequate street cleansing across our borough. Ealing Labour have cut back leaf collection, street cleaning and reduced paid for green garden waste services! They have presided over the closure of Stirling Road recycling facilities in Acton and reduced access at Greenford depot to five days a week and fly tipping is on the rise.”
A TfL spokesperson said, "We are committed to working to provide a safe, clean and well-maintained environment for people walking in the capital. We raised this issue with our Works for London contractor for immediate attention and work on cleaning the drainage and the general upkeep of the subway has been completed today."
