Passengers travelling through Ealing and Acton on the Elizabeth line can now refill their bottles for free, thanks to newly installed drinking fountains rolled out by Transport for London as warmer weather settles over the capital.

TfL has introduced 11 new fountains across the route, with Hanwell, West Ealing and Acton Main Line among the stations benefiting from the upgrade. The move means that the majority of Elizabeth line stops west of Paddington now offer free drinking water, part of a wider push to help passengers stay hydrated, cut down on single-use plastics and save money.

The fountains have been installed at Taplow, Burnham, Iver, Hanwell, West Ealing, Acton Main Line, Maryland, Seven Kings, Chadwell Heath, Gidea Park and Harold Wood. Two more—at Custom House and Woolwich—are due to follow later in the summer.

For passengers in Ealing and Acton, the new facilities arrive at a particularly useful moment. The Elizabeth line has become a key artery for west London, with Hanwell, West Ealing and Acton Main Line all seeing significant increases in footfall since the line’s full opening. The addition of drinking fountains brings these stations in line with TfL’s wider sustainability goals while offering a practical benefit for everyday travellers.

At Hanwell, the fountain sits within a station that has undergone major improvements in recent years, including step-free access and restored heritage features. West Ealing, now a busy interchange for local buses and the Greenford branch, gains another amenity for commuters heading into Paddington or Heathrow. And at Acton Main Line, where passenger numbers have surged since the Elizabeth line’s arrival, the new water point adds a welcome convenience for residents and workers using the station daily.

TfL is encouraging customers to carry water during warmer spells, noting that easy access to refills can make a noticeable difference to comfort while travelling. The new fountains are free to use and designed for quick bottle filling, reducing the need for passengers to buy drinks on the go.

To make the fountains easier to find, TfL has also launched a new Elizabeth line drinking-fountain map, showing every location across the network.

Trish Ashton, TfL’s Director of Rail, said the initiative reflects the organisation’s commitment to both passenger wellbeing and environmental responsibility.

“We know how important it is to stay hydrated and cool during the warmer weather on our network, and we are committed to providing easy access to free drinking water wherever we can,” she said. “Sustainability is at the heart of all that we do, and these new water fountains will help reduce use of single-use plastic bottles, continuing to support our vision to be a strong, green heartbeat of London.”
