Concert Being Held in Support of Emmaus House

The promotional poster for a fund-raising concert for Acton Homeless Concern at Emmaus House has had a long-distance journey.
The poster was created by Chiswick resident and adverting copywriter, Alan Bignell who is also a member of A Wing and a Prayer who will be performing at the event. To focus on the plight of the homeless, Alan changed the expression ‘Home sweet home.’ to ‘Home street home.’ His idea was to have this line embroidered and framed the same way ‘Home sweet home’ is in some homes. But instead of it hanging in a hallway or living room, he wanted it hanging on an outside brick wall.
This all seemed quite straight forward until it came to the embroidering. The person Alan had in mind to do it was busy and he was stuck to find someone else. It was only later when on holiday in Porto that his wife spotted some embroidery in a wool shop window. When the shop keeper was shown what was wanted, she said she could do it but it would take two weeks. Alan and his wife were leaving two days later.
A friend living in Porto came to the rescue by offering to pick it up (Alan didn’t want to risk it getting lost in the post) and handing it on to another friend visiting her who could bring it back to London. Miraculously everything went to plan and the beautifully embroidered ‘Home street home’ arrived safely in Chiswick a journey of 1,260 mils.
That left the question of the brick wall. This time it wasn’t necessary to leave the country, well not quite. A photographer friend living in Dover had the perfect wall just outside his house and shot it there.
The poster is starting to go up this week in Chiswick, Acton and Ealing for the fundraising dance on Saturday 25 November at the St Peter and Paul Parish Hall in Northfields, South Ealing (W13 9RA). Tickets cost £5 and are available on the door.
