A40 Westway Reopens Ahead of Expectations
TfL says vital repair works have been completed

The A40 Westway reopened to traffic this Tuesday (21 April) after a month-long full closure, with Transport for London (TfL) confirming that the complex repair programme has been completed slightly ahead of the end-of-April timeframe previously indicated. The route, one of the busiest in London with up to 96,000 vehicles using it each day, had been shut since 20 March for essential safety works.
TfL engineers have spent the past four weeks replacing two major structural joints on the Marylebone Flyover section of the Westway. The joints, which allow the flyover to expand and contract safely with temperature changes and heavy traffic, had reached the end of their serviceable life. The work required a full closure in both directions between the Westway roundabout and the Marylebone flyover.
The closure was also used to carry out additional improvements designed to reduce future disruption, including resurfacing more than a kilometre of carriageway in both directions and completing drainage maintenance. TfL said the combination of works will help keep the route safe and reliable for years to come.
Stuart Harvey, TfL’s Chief Capital Officer, said the reopening would come as welcome news to road users. “We’re pleased to confirm that the A40 Westway will be open to the public from this evening,” he said. “We know the full closure has caused disruption, and I’d like to thank road users and local communities for their patience while this essential work was completed to one of London’s busiest routes.”
While the full closure has endrf, TfL has confirmed that smaller-scale weekend works will continue from Friday 24 April for four weekends, finishing in June — a month ahead of the original schedule. These works will be far more localised and are not expected to cause the same level of disruption.
Drivers are advised to check the latest travel information on the TfL website or the TfL Go app before setting out.
