Westway Weekend Closures Likely to Bring Heavy Traffic |

Diversion routes include North Circular, A4 and A312 Parkway January 20, 2026 Drivers across west London are being warned to expect significant disruption over the coming months as Transport for London (TfL) begins major safety works on the A40 Westway. The eastbound carriageway between the Westway Roundabout and Marylebone Flyover will be closed on weekends from Friday 23 January until mid-April 2026, with further works on the route continuing until July 2026. The project involves replacing safety-critical joints on one of the busiest roads in TfL’s network. The eastbound A40 will shut every weekend from 22:00 on Fridays until 05:00 on Mondays. Signed diversions will be in place, but TfL is warning that the impact will be felt far beyond the immediate area. Local roads such are expected to be extremely busy, particularly during peak hours (06:30–09:30 and 16:00–19:00). Bus services operating along or near the A40 corridor — including routes 6, 18, 23, 27, 31, 49, 52, 72, 94, 95, 98, 139, 148, 205, 207/N207, 220, 260, 272, 274, 283, 295, 316, 452, E3, C1, SL8 and others — are likely to face delays. With the A40 eastbound closed, many drivers heading towards central London or connecting to major routes out of the city will be diverted onto alternative corridors. This includes A312 The Parkway, A406 North Circular and A4 Great West Road. These diversion routes already carry heavy traffic, and the additional pressure is expected to cause noticeably higher congestion across west London, particularly around Ealing, Acton, Brentford and Chiswick. TfL is advising drivers to allow extra time for journeys or avoid driving altogether where possible.
A TfL spokesperson said the works are essential to keep the A40 safe and operational: “We appreciate this will cause disruption, but these repairs are vital. We’re asking people to plan ahead and consider alternative ways of travelling.” Further closure details and travel advice will be published as the works progress.
