Tube Strikes Called Off Just Before They Were Due to Start
RMT says 'positive discussions' have enabled further talks

Strikes on London Underground that would have ground the network to a halt this week have been called off just before they were due to commence.
The RMT union says that ‘positive discussions’ with management have enable the suspension of the industrial action which was due to start Sunday evening (7 January) and continue through the following week.
The union’s general secretary Mick Lynch said, "Following further positive discussions today, the negotiations on a pay deal for our London Underground members can now take place on an improved basis and mandate with significant further funding for a settlement being made available."
TfL has previously said that a 5% pay rise for staff is all it can afford but the Mayor is understood to have pledged additional funds to end the dispute.
Sadiq Khan said he was "delighted" with the development adding, "This shows what can be achieved by engaging and working with trade unions and transport staff, rather than working against them."
A TfL spokesperson said, "We will now meet with representatives of all the unions to agree on the best way for this funding to be used to resolve the current dispute.”
Some problems with the tube may occur on Monday morning due to the late cancellation of the strike so passengers are advised to check before travelling.
