A major fire took hold at the Townmead Road Waste and Recycling Centre in Mortlake this Sunday evening (20 June).

Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were called to the incident after 16 calls were received starting at 8.43pm.

100 tonnes of waste was alight and it wasn’t until 11.24pm that the blaze was under control with firefighters remaining at the scene through the night to dampen down the area.

There were no reports of any injuries.

Residents in the area were advised to continue to keep their windows and doors shut due to the smoke.

Fire crews from Richmond, Heston, Chiswick, Hammersmith. Wandsworth and other surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire will be investigated by the Brigade.

The Recycling Centre will be closed until further notice. Anyone with a booking will be contacted about rescheduling.
