Putney Rotary Club Visits the Borough's Unsung Heroes

The Putney Rotary Club along with the Mayor of Wandsworth paid a visit to Wandsworth Fire Station early this month to say thank you to the hardworking fire fighters.

The Club’s President Paddy Rowe and Immediate Past President Louise McCance-Price were joined on 13 July by The Worshipful The Mayor of Wandsworth, Cllr. Richard Field, and his son Christopher Field to presented a box of M&M chocolates for the whole team, donated by Mars .

Borough Commander John Snelgrove was at the station to receive the Mayor. Wandsworth is one of the London Fire Brigade stations that provides a fire and rescue service and has operated since 1892. Not only does the Brigade rescue people and property in fires, but it also raises awareness of safety and wellbeing in the community, including safety around water and on the roads.

Mayor of Wandsworth, Cllr. Richard Field said, “I thoroughly enjoyed my visit as Mayor of Wandsworth - meeting and thanking Green Watch fire fighters (on duty) at LFB West Hill Wandsworth. Their ongoing dedicated service has been evident, particularly during this Covid pandemic. An exercise was performed, underlining how lucky we are to have such professional and well-trained firefighters keeping us safe in our Wandsworth Community.”

In the storm last Monday night, flash flooding took the crew as far as Hampstead to help their fellow fire fighters manage the damage from the torrential downpour. Sub Officer, Matthew Mayes explained that they have 40 firefighters who work in four shifts from the station, who are mobilised within one minute to help where needed. They also keep fully up to date on the buildings in their borough, so in advance of a call out they can get straight to sorting the fire or safety issue, as soon as they arrive at an incident.

Station Commander Stewart Brown also spoke about the Fire Cadets they will be starting in January 2022 at Wandsworth, an initiative for 14-17 year-olds that gets youngsters volunteering in the service, building their confidence, making friends and developing their skills in a fun environment.
