Builders Move Into Old Oak Common Station

Construction work set to start on UK’s largest newly-built railway station

The company responsible for the building of Old Oak Common station have taken possession of the site.

The Balfour Beatty VINCI SYSTRA (BBVS) joint venture has been given the contract for what will be the UK’s largest newly-built railway station with 14 platforms and an interchange between HS2 and Crossrail.

Work on the site so far has been preparatory with Costain Skanska undertaking clearance of the area for the last two years. BBVS were given the contract to build the station last September.

The first services on HS2 are currently scheduled to begin between 2028 and 2031 at which point the station could be used by up to a quarter of a million people each day making it one of the busiest in the UK.

The Heathrow Express will also call at the station as well as trains serving the west of England and Wales.

Piling work is due to start after the station plans received approval from the Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC) in May.

About 1,400 people will be working on the site employed directly by BBVS with others working form sub-contractors. 250 apprenticeship positions will be available with BBVS saying they would like to encourage local candidates to apply.
