The Arts Society Chiswick's February 2024 Lecture
January 25, 2024 The Arts Society Chiswick’s second lecture of 2024 is a look into Palladio's first designs, his style and his legacy, which can be seen in buildings throughout the world. The talk by art historian and lecturer, Dr Lydia Goodson will be on the subject ‘Vicenza City of Palladio’. Once surrounded by 13th-century walls, Vicenza is famous as the home of the 16th-century architect Andrea della Pietra della Gondola- or Palladio. Palladio's first designs were built in Vicenza, where the cityscape of this little visited part of the Veneto remains a testament to his extraordinary vision. In this talk Dr Goodson will explore Palladio's style, looking at some of the buildings that he designed for patrons in Vicenza and its surrounding countryside, and look at how Palladio’s legacy can be seen in buildings throughout the world, including closer to home at Chiswick House. Dr Goodson is an art historian specialising in the art and material culture of the Italian Renaissance. After a career in television production and raising a family Lydia returned to academia and now holds a BA in Renaissance History and an MA in History of Art. She is passionate about the benefits of life-long learning and hugely enjoys writing and delivering art history lectures and courses for audiences of all ages. Olivia Freeman, Chair, The Arts Society Chiswick, says, “We welcome both members and guests to learn more about Italian Renaissance architecture that has influenced so much locally“. The talk takes place at 8:00pm on Thursday, 8 February at POSK on King Street in Hammersmith. Doors open at 7pm, as does the private bar. Guests are very welcome for a payment of £10 on the door. Membership of the Arts Society Chiswick includes 10 expert lectures on the second Thursday of every month (except August and December) and the opportunity to participate in tours, visits, social events and Special Interest Days. For more information see the society's web site. The Arts Society Chiswick brings people together through a shared curiosity for the arts, to create opportunities for everyone to be part of a diverse community in which they can enjoy, learn about, participate in, and preserve the Arts and Cultural Heritage.
