The Arts Society Chiswick is resuming Special Interest Sessions with “The Life and Times of Oscar Wilde” about the aesthete, writer, wit, social analyst, gay icon and the first modern celebrity. It will take place in the Sapphire Room at POSK from 10:30am on Wednesday 30 November, marking the anniversary of Oscar's untimely death in 1900.

The session will consist of two one-hour lectures about the life and times of Oscar Wilde. Starting at 10.30am with coffee and tea being available from 10.00am. With a 15 minute break in-between and following the second lecture there will be time for questions and it is expected that the session will finish at 1.00pm.

• The first lecture will be from his Irish roots, to his days as a student at Oxford and his meteoric rise to the heights of celebrity. Travel with him to the United States and examine his starring role within the artistic and theatrical worlds of 19th Century London.
• The second lecture examines how, when at the height of his success, a fateful decision led to disaster. See how his involvement in the queer underworld of naughty nineties London and his passion, resulted in him being at the centre of the most infamous series of trials of the 19th Century.

The lecturer is Simon Whitehouse, an actor, presenter and award winning Blue Badge Guide. His specialisms are Theatre, Literature, Fashion and Art History, but above all he has a passionate interest in the life of Oscar Wilde.

The cost is £35.00 for members and non-members. If you would like to attend email to book your place

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.

We’ve always done that and won’t be changing, in fact we’d like to do more.
