'Pantomime: A Very British Feast' with Giles Ramsay
It’s panto season and rehearsals are in full swing! Giles Ramsay goes behind the curtain on the world of dames and delightful misrule with the lecture: “Pantomime: A Very British Feast” at 8:00pm on Thursday 10 November at POSK. Come and learn more about a genre which has been over 2500 years in the making from mixing Greek and Roman drama with commedia dell’arte and medieval morality plays, stir in a sprig of C17th masque, a dash of C18th harlequinade and a hefty shot of Victorian music hall. Mix this potent brew and, hey presto, you have the modern Christmas pantomime. Oh No You Don’t! Giles Ramsay is a writer and producer who has lectured in theatre for over two decades. Doors open at 7pm, as does the private bar. The lecture will start at 8pm and guests are very welcome - £10 on the door. “We look forward to welcoming members and guests to this fun evening,“ Olivia Freeman, Chair, The Arts Society Chiswick. Later in the month the society is resuming Special Interest Sessions with “The Life and Times of Oscar Wilde” about the aesthete, writer, wit, social analyst, gay icon and the first modern celebrity. It will take place in the Sapphire Room at POSK from 10:30am on Wednesday 30 November 2022, marking the anniversary of Oscar's untimely death in 1900. The session will consist of two one-hour lectures about the life and times of Oscar Wilde. Starting at 10.30am with coffee and tea being available from 10.00am. With a 15 minute break in-between and following the second lecture there will be time for questions and it is expected that the session will finish at 1.00pm. • The first lecture will be from his Irish roots, to his days as a student at Oxford and his meteoric rise to the heights of celebrity. Travel with him to the United States and examine his starring role within the artistic and theatrical worlds of 19th Century London. The lecturer is Simon Whitehouse, an actor, lecturer, presenter and award winning Blue Badge Guide. His specialisms are Theatre, Literature, Fashion and Art History, but above all he has a passionate interest in the life of Oscar Wilde.
