Bees make it through to the third round

Brentford's season finally got going with a fully deserved giant killing victory over Championship team Hull City in tonight's Carling Cup tie.

Brentford's football was fluent and confident and they overcame a dreadful start when Simpson's awful header across his own goal gave Mark Cullen an early gift goal.

Not what Richard Lee would have asked for on his Bees debut but the keeper impressed with his shot stopping and general reading of the game.

Robbie Simpson redeemed himself with a magnificent curling free kick over the wall and nearly repeated the trick soon afterwards.

The loudest cheer of the half was reserved for pantomime villain Paul McShane limping off injured after being subjected to non stop abuse from Brentford supporters still angry about the part he played in Alex Rhodes's injury five years ago.

Brentford survived Koran's curler against the bar and dominated the second half. Alexander forced a wonderful save from Duke, Weston's cross hit the bar and Simpson's perfect low cross only needed a touch.

Extra time was looming before Charlie MacDonald's perfect cross was met by Marcus Bean's diving header for his first goal in nearly 18 months.

Despite a late scare from a free kick Brentford held on for a memorable victory.

There were 11 heroes tonight. Nobody should be singled out as this was a great team performance which augurs well for the long season ahead.
