Brentford through to second round of Carling Cup

A pleasing win put Brentford into the second round of the cup for the first time in ages in front of a crowd of just over 2000.

Brentford bossed the first half and scored their first when Craig Woodman's cross was headed home by Robbie Simpson.

Left back Woodman added the second with a slightly bizzare (and Stephen Hunt-esque) free kick which deceived everyone when it went straight in

Brentford could have easily added to their tally with some bright spells of football - Alexander and Forster playing an integral part of this - but both Legge and Karleigh were denied by the crossbar. A snapshot from Alexander from the edge of the box also whistled just over.

For their part, Cheltenham played some slick football at times, and Simon Moore was called into a couple of saves.

The young keeper did OK in difficult conditions but might take some blame for the visitor's goal - a save from a (possibly deflected) free kick squirmed from his grasp and Jeffers popped up to poke home whilst the Bees defence froze. Andy Scott is apparently still looking for another loanee stopper but the number one shirt appears to be Moore's for the time being.

Marcus Bean looked more like his old self in the centre of the park whilst Simpson and Wood had good first and second halves respectively - Woody lobbing a delightful cross to the far post late on to Charlie Macdonald - who saw his header blocked on the goal-line.
