A project to develop a 'Vision for the future of the tidal Thames'

The Port of London Authority (PLA) has confirmed the two dates and venues for the first round of public meetings as part of its project to develop a Vision for the future of the tidal Thames – the 95 miles of river that runs from Teddington through London to the North Sea.

The first of the public meetings is on 14th May 2015 at The London Rowing Club, Putney. The alternative meeting is on 2nd June at St Paul’s Roof Pavilion, Southbank Centre.

The meetings will start at 6.30 pm and finish by around 8.00 pm, with refreshments available from 6.00 pm. Following closely on from the end of the initial phase of public consultation on the project, the meetings provide further opportunity for people to help shape the future of the Thames.



The PLA oversees river operations and safety on 95 miles of the tidal Thames from Teddington Lock, through the capital, and out to the sea. The tidal Thames is:

• the country’s second biggest port by tonnage of goods handled;
• busiest inland waterway for passengers and freight;
• a centre for sporting excellence and a venue for global events including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee River Pageant

The PLA launched its Vision project in March. It is due to produce the final Thames Vision by next spring. To kick off the project and prompt people’s thinking, the PLA launched a short film in which seventeen people explain what the river means to them.

PLA chief executive Robin Mortimer (pictured above) explained: “The response to the initial public consultation has been great. These public meetings will enable us to get deeper into how people want to see use of the river evolve. We’re planning for the sessions to be interactive, so people coming along can look forward to a lively debate.”
