Thames Water to Investigate Acton Flooding

The Flood Alleviation Scheme which has been on-going for many months is due to continue. Thames Water have announced that they are investing in sewer improvements in Acton, after problems with flooding over the past few years due to the sewers not being large enough to take the rainwater. They say the work will reduce the risk of flooding in local streets and in peoples' homes.

The £8 million upgrade will start in July and is due to be completed within 1 year.  There are 3 main components:

  • Horn Lane area: A new sewer to take excess flows from the existing sewers in Horn Lane. The new sewer beneath Horn Lane will fill an underground storage sewer located within Springfield Gardens. When the storm has ended the storage sewer will be emptied back into the Horn lane sewer.

  • Churchfield Road Area: A new sewer starting from Cumberland Park, via Myrtle Rd, Churchfield Road and through Acton Park. The majority of the work will be tunnelled to minimise disruption.

  • Acton High Street area: sewage will be diverted from existing sewers in the High Street via a new sewer along Melville Villas Road, Gloucester Rd connecting to the existing sewer in Scott Court, Petersfield Rd.

Thames Water say their contractors, J Murphy will be undertaking this work on their behalf. Work will take place Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 6pm, Saturday 8am to 1pm. At critical times it may be necessary to work outside these hours. Site compounds will be located in Springfield Park and Acton Park. It is difficult to assess how disruptive the above works will be as there is no more specific information yet, but Thames Water have apologised in advance for any inconvenience the work may cause.

Thames Water have organised a “drop-in” session on 18 June to provide further information and answer any questions. The session will be held between 4.00pm and 7.00pm upstairs in the Kings Head Pub, 214 High St Acton, W3 9NX. They look forward to meeting residents.
