Day Two of the 'heaviest snow in 18 years' and school children are still basking in the reflected sun on a blanket of white. Or is it more the glory of a second day off school?!

The Council’s emergency planning procedures were activated early on Monday morning following snowfall overnight.

"The system to check essential cover was provided worked well and all critical services were
provided throughout the day," said a Council spokesperson."

The Council says it has already used more than 500 tonnes of grit to treat all major roads in the borough several times and will continue in their efforts to keep the borough’s roads moving.

The priority is to keep major arterial roads open, although gritters have now also covered all secondary routes.  And gritting and salting is taking place on footpaths and pavements, with priority being given to town centres.

"Yesterday we had gritted and re-gritted these priority road several times and had taken the opportunity to grit secondary roads a couple of times," said the spokesperson.

"We are working hard to get services back to normal as quickly as possible, despite some services being affected by the snow including
having to suspend refuse and recycling collections yesterday.

"The Council is aiming to carry out those collections today and is working hard to return all collections tonormal as soon as possible, despite the significant backlog.

""Residents are being asked to put their refuse and recycling out for
collection on the normal day, although it might be necessary for the
Council to collect it the following day if crews cannot get round all
roads.

Residents are being asked to continue to check the Council’s
website
. And you can get up to date information on the trains and buses on at the TFL website.
