All four Acton wards to get car club parking bays
Local Liberal Democrat councillors voted to press ahead for a number of car club parking bays to be introduced on The Avenue, Acton Lane and Fairlawn Grove and a number of other locations in Acton. (See table below)
Car clubs allow local residents to book cars by the hour, day or as long as they want – online or by telephone. Members of the club access the cars by using a security PIN code and a swipe card. There are a variety of tariffs to suite both the occasional and more regular car user.. Cars have their designated parking bays for members to collect and return after their booking. Cllrs Malcolm and Rose met with James Finlayson, Director of City Car Club, to discuss the consultation about the proposed car club bays.
Lib Dem councillor and transport spokesman, Gary Malcolm, said: “Lib Dems say that car clubs are a great idea because they save money for residents and reduce the number of cars parked in our streets. For every one Car Club parking bay six residents sell their car and use the car club car because it is often cheaper.” He added: “The council will be consulting residents on proposed locations soon and the Lib Dems want to get the details right so the car club will be popular and used by residents.” James Finlayson, Director of City Car Club, said: “Car sharing clubs are a relatively new concept that has considerable local benefits. City Car Club already has 15 cars working successfully across the borough and demand is such that we hope to double this number over the next few months. New locations will allow even more local residents and businesses to benefit from being a member and will further contribute to improving the local environment by reducing car ownership and overall car journeys undertaken.”
