Local students have good reason to celebrate as they achieved a record breaking set of GCSE results a week after sharply improved A Level results. Once again the improvement in local schools exceed that seen nationally.

Among the many individual successes three students managed to get among the top five marks nationally in the English literature, French and Spanish exams and two were among the top five in media.

Ruth Cadbury, Executive Member for Children and Lifelong Learning congratulated students and staff saying, “ GCSE students in Hounslow have recorded the borough’s best ever results with an improvement that exceeds the national average. Students and their teachers put years of energy and effort into their GCSEs and the results show the hard work has paid off. ”

There were big increases in top grades at both Brentford School and Chiswick Community School which both saw the proportion of students gaining 5 higher grade passes increase by a third. The best performing school in the borough was Gumley House with 83% of girls getting 5 or more higher grade passes. The borough's four faith schools occupied the top four places for GCSE passes.

Dr Bob Garnett, Director of Lifelong Learning, said, “These results are very good indeed and build on last week’s outstanding A’ levels. They are further evidence of the tremendous efforts being made in our schools. Once again, it shows that no one need look further than their local school to obtain an excellent education for their children in Hounslow.”

The percentage of exams graded A* to C in Hounslow was 58% up from 52.4% last year but this remains below the national average of 61% The number of pupils leaving school without any GCSEs fell from 4 percent in 2004 to 1.9 per cent this year.
