Green scheme gives waste the sack

Garden waste in the borough now needs to be put in special biodegradable bags

Ealing Council is expecting to recycle 1200 tonnes of green waste this year as part of a new recycling collection scheme.

Garden waste including grass cuttings, twigs, plants, weeds, garden prunings and hedge trimmings will now be collected separately from household waste and sent for composting.

The garden waste will be collected in special biodegradable refuse sacks that are tough enough to hold the garden waste, but will break down naturally along with the organic material at the composting stage.

To order the bags, at 50 pence per bag, please contact ECT recycling on 020 8813 3193 or 3194 or visit www.ectrecycling.co.uk. Already the borough's residents have ordered more than 12,000 bags in the run-up to the start of the scheme on 2 June. You can order sacks on-line.

The new scheme operates fortnightly across the whole borough from June until the end of November, to coincide with the peak period when most people traditionally put out garden waste. Next year the collection will start in April. There will be no limit to the number of sacks of garden waste that people can put out for collection.

Cllr Philip Portwood, cabinet member for streets and environment, said:

"This is a great scheme that is good news for the environment and for all our residents who need their garden waste collected. It diverts waste from landfill and brings us closer to meeting our environmental targets."
