The Womble Orinoco was given a couple of extra helping hands at a clear up on the River Wandle when Liberal Democrat Mayoral candidate, Siobhan Benita, and Sue Wixley, the Liberal Democrat constituency candidate for Merton & Wandsworth joined in the latest litter collection.

Siobhan Benita with Orinoco

Siobhan Benita, a former senior civil servant who grew up in Merton,is campaigning to make London greener as well as cleaner as part of her campaign to Love London Better. She has called for recycling to be made easier across the capital and London to be made plastic-free. Ms Benita also wants City Hall to lead a keep London tidy campaign.

Sue Wixley, who was the Lib Dem candidate for Putney in the last General Election, said: "We'd like to see recycling standardised across the capital to reduce the confusion caused by each borough having its own recycling rules. That would be an excellent way to help Londoners recycle more. I'd also like to see new, more effective approaches to flytipping piloted because this is a huge issue for many local residents I talk to."

Orinoco and the Wombles are fictional pointy-nosed, furry creatures created by Elisabeth Beresford and originally appearing in a series of children's novels from 1968. They live in burrows on Wimbledon Common, where they aim to help the environment by collecting and recycling rubbish in creative ways. Other Wombles were; Great Uncle Bulgaria, Tobermory, Madame Cholet, Wellington, Tomsk, and Bungo.
