Council warned over 'dumping children'

TV Presenter John Inverdale launched a major new campaign this week to recruit foster carers for the borough of Hounslow marking the beginning of a major recruitment drive.

A total of 360 children are being cared for through the Council and there is a shortfall of 100 carers.

John Inverdale, who is currently presenting the BBC’s coverage of the Six Nations international rugby tournament, endorsed the campaign with the release of 360 helium balloons: one for every child currently in care.

Cllr Ruth Cadbury, executive member for children and lifelong learning, said without 100 new carers, vulnerable young people will not enjoy the stable home background needed to develop as adults. “Carers do not require special qualifications or need to come from any particular class, career or background. You just need patience, caring, stability, experience with children and a good sense of humour.

“We need carers for long term fostering, respite and short term needs. Like many authorities, we also have a particular requirement for carers for teenagers and sibling groups.  Whilst we appreciate that people do not just foster for money, being a carer these days offers very generous financial allowances which do not impact on other benefits. We also have an excellent training and support service providing advice and guidance to our carers at any time, night or day.”

JOhn InverdaleJohn Inverdale, was delighted to be involved with the launch of the campaign. He said “Foster children, like all children, need the stability and continuity of a caring family during times of change. We hope this campaign will highlight the need and encourage people to find out more about fostering and the opportunities and rewards that fostering can offer”.
