A Brentford man caught stealing a bicycle on Chiswick High Road was later charged with the possession of a class A drug when a strip search at Chiswick police station revealed that he had 12 wraps of heroin hidden up his backside.

Barry Thorpe of Cherry Crescent had been trying to steal a mountain bike when he stopped by police on April 4th. An initial search found him to be in possession of a knife which police deduced he used to cut up drugs.

Thorpe, whose girlfriend is heavily pregnant, has a series of convictions going back to 1999. Despite pleas that he be allowed conditional bail just in case the birth happened before sentencing the Magistrates decided to send him to Wormwood Scrubs as he had previously breached bail conditions.

He will be sentenced on May 13th.
